Designing the Hospitality Interface of Tomorrow.

Athena is an AI-native, vertical travel concierge-travel companion.

I designed it as a domain-specific AI agent with an agentic architecture that combines conversational understanding, memory, retrieval, preference modeling, and decision-making to create personalized Athens experiences.

An LLM can sit on top of the system as a reasoning and conversational layer.

Designing the Hospitality Interface of Tomorrow

For decades, the hotel website has been the digital front desk: travelers search, browse, compare, and eventually book.

But as AI moves from answering questions to understanding intent and taking action, that journey is beginning to change.
The next generation of travelers may not search for the right hotel at all—they may simply describe the experience they want and delegate the decision.

Athena AI explores what that future could feel like.
Rather than placing another chatbot on top of a traditional booking experience, I designed Athena as a memory-driven, conversational travel companion that understands a traveler's preferences, reasons through trade-offs, adapts when priorities change, and progressively moves from inspiration to decision.

The goal is not to give travelers more choices, but to help them make better choices with less effort—
while making the experience feel genuinely human.

Design Philosophy for Athena AI

Athena is not another booking platform.
She is an intelligent travel companion.
The interface is calm, premium, human, and trustworthy.
Every design decision should reduce cognitive load and increase confidence.
Users should feel guided rather than managed.

In prepping for Athena AI, I looked primarily at the hotel booking sites/apps, (booking.com, airbnb, etc) and found the frustration of the users who would rather book boutique hotel experiences rather than chain hotels and discovered that the process was not only daunting, confusing and difficult but it was designed and created in such a way as to favor larger chains in quite a stunning way.

The boutique hotel booking industry has become increasingly fragmented, transactional, and overwhelming for modern travelers. While boutique hospitality is built around personality, atmosphere, and curated experiences, the digital booking experience rarely reflects those values. Most platforms still rely on rigid filters, endless comparison grids, and generic room listings that reduce emotionally driven travel decisions into a mechanical search process. Travelers are forced to navigate dozens of tabs, reviews, and booking sites just to answer simple questions like: Will this hotel fit the kind of trip I want?

This disconnect becomes even more apparent in a destination like Athens, where travelers are not simply booking accommodation — they are searching for atmosphere, culture, local authenticity, and emotional connection. Traditional booking flows prioritize inventory and pricing over trust, personalization, and anticipation. As a result, users experience decision fatigue, uncertainty, and reduced confidence during the booking process, leading to abandoned sessions and weaker direct conversion rates for boutique hotels competing against large aggregator platforms.

I created Athena AI to be more than an ai boutique hotel booking platform, but a travel companion and local expert.

Solving the pain points of the usual players in the field and delivering a much smoother, more efficient and pleasant experience for users.
Natural language requests, smart recommendations, dynamic pricing hints, personalized add-ons will go a long way to reduce booking abandonments and friction, fear of hidden costs, choice overload, generic results and replace that with something personal, trustworthy, knowledgeable and efficient.
This is no doubt the future of booking.
The design focuses on Athens where high demand for unique boutique hotels leads to high frustration from users in trying to find and book what they are looking for.

The interesting thing is, what began as an ai boutique hotel booking platform, evolved into a booking/concierge and travel companion in a fascinating project, still evolving.
